710 - How Much Will It Cost?

If you and your spouse are able to use an uncontested divorce, the cost for that will include a filing fee ‑ in Talladega County where I file my uncontested divorces it's 170 dollars ‑ plus the fee for the legal services. The cost for the legal services will vary of course, from a low of about two hundred dollars to as much as a thousand dollars, depending on the lawyer.

There's lots of information about uncontested divorce here on the Divorce Line.

If you and your spouse mediate your divorce, and if you spend six hours or so in mediation, you can plan on 12 hundred dollars or so for the mediator's time, plus whatever the two of you pay to your lawyers. Remember, at least one of you will have to have a lawyer prepare the legal documents of divorce after you and your spouse reach agreement in mediation. And of course you'll pay the filing fee for a mediated divorce, too.

Now if you and your spouse end up in adversarial divorce, that's the hardest to gauge from a cost standpoint. It would be unusual for you to finish an adversarial divorce for less than three or four thousand in fees, and the cost could run much higher. It's not unusual, for example, to see two people who can communicate only through their lawyers spend 30 or 40 thousand dollars on divorce, and these are often people who need that money desperately. They need it to pay living expenses, to pay child support, or to go back to school, and instead they're paying it to people like me.

Most people don't do that, though. Most divorcing couples keep control of their divorce, and they manage to keep the cost, the time, and the pain to a minimum.

Alabama Family Law Center serves clients who need to get through divorce and who are able to be reasonably cooperative. The goal is for both spouses to survive divorce and move on with their lives with some money in their pockets and their dignity intact.

No representation is made that the quality of the legal services to be performed is greater than the quality of legal services performed by other lawyers.
